Antique Persian Heriz Serapi Rug 44177, Size: 12'7" x 19', Country Origin: Persia, Circa date: Turn of the Century - Heriz Serapi rugs are renowned for the graphic monumentality of their design and the quality of their color, but few achieve the perfect balance of design and color that we see in this outstanding example. Here a pale blue star medallion with elaborate finials in gold and ivory sits majestically amidst a dramatic, open black field. Ivory cornerpieces with soft blue and gold fillers frame the field and help transition into the red-ground vinescroll border. Apart from its stunning color, much of the interest in this antique carpet relies on the adroit counterpoint between the grand main forms, and the delicate detail that fills them, especially the gently scalloped contouring of the main elements. This, along with the relative openness of the design despite the rich detail, is what makes this Persian rug truly exceptional.
This antique Heriz Serapi piece exhibits an extraordinary medallion design with a unique style and bold color schema. The medallion itself draws immediate attention to the center of the rug, which then propagates through the deep blue field with its earthy extensions. The guards mimic the medallion in a dichotic color-reversal and complimentary design. The geometric tendencies of the medallion are also beautifully paired with the linear flora that flow through the border and are inscribed in the guards and inner medallion. The blue-tinged abrash that garnishes the piece provides a natural depth to the rug that is simply defined as brilliant.
