Rare true Serab Northwest Persian long rug, ca. 1900, 4'4" x 7'8". Wool pile on wool foundation; 63 symmetric knots per square inch (7 x 9). Most of the rugs we see called Serab in the trade are actually Hamadan/Malayer. We call this a true Serab because it has clear Heriz/Serapi features, including the ribbed Bakshaish weave, classic Kurd minor borders, and unmistakable original overcasting. Beautiful natural colors, including a bounty of real camel hair and soft greens. Some visible foundation, a few small holes, minor moth areas, grandmother repairs (purple thread), erosion of ends and edges, but plenty of soft original length pile remains in areas of the borders. Clean, no splits, no hardness, no cracking. Fresh find. (Inventory Number 405.)
