Skirt cloth (kain panjang). Indonesia, Java, Solo/Surakarta. Intricately drawn -batik tulis, worn as a skirt cloth on formal occasions. Produced in Solo, the design consists of long feathered birds and Garuda wings on a floral background. Bird motifs played an important symbolic and ornamental role, the Garuda taking pride of place, with origins in Hindu mythology and associated with power and prosperity. Deep indigo and soft soga brown dye-traditional colours of the region. Delicate workmanship, fine cotton. Size 240x105cm. c. 1940.
