Textiles from the Silk Road have long fascinated scholars. In recent years Chinese scholars have made several important discoveries that are helping to reveal the secrets of this rich history. It is our great pleasure to host leading Silk Road scholar Dr. Zhao Feng to discuss his recent work. In 2007, he published Textiles from Dunhuang in uk Collections, a survey of the textiles found at the Mogao Caves, or the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, which was strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road. Zhao’s current work focuses on Silk Road textiles preserved in French, Indian, American, Russian, and Chinese collections.

Special attention will be given to the costume of the famous mummy Yingpan m15, excavated in the Xinjiang region and conserved at the Chinese National Silk Museum. Zhao will also discuss two recent exhibitions, Memories of Central Asia at Peking University, and Divine Garments with Seams at the China National Silk Museum.

Dr. Zhao Feng is Vice Director of the China National Silk Museum, Hangzhou; Director of the Chinese Centre for Textile Identification and Conservation (cctic); and Professor of Textile and Costume History, Donghua University, Shanghai. He is the recipient of numerous academic grants and fellowships, and he has published many titles concerning Chinese textiles.

This is a special fund-raiser for the Textile Arts Council.
Admission to lecture is $5 after museum admission.
