These are handwoven antique zabuton, Japanese cushions used to sit on the floor. This pair of zabuton are made from hand spun cotton dyed with botanical indigo and woven in a handsome stripe pattern. The cushions are from the early Meiji period (1868-1912) and their small size suggests that they were meant to be portable. The zabuton pictured on the right has noticeable wear to its face and a small, coin-sized hole on the reverse, while the zabuton pictured on the left is in very good condition. a very unique and charming pair.
