Tsutsugaki futonji panel, Japan, Meiji (circa 1880), cm 149x33. This is a panel from a bedding cloth (futonji) decorated in the so-called ‘tsutsugaki’ technique, with the pattern of a fan in white and that of a ribbon in light blue. The lightweight cotton is hand spun and hand woven, the design rendering is beautifully clear and the indigo colour is a rich, bright, medium blue that is nicely faded. The cloth has just the right amount of wear; it still embodies the soulful, old Japanese feeling without being worn-out or sad from too much age. This is an intriguing length of indigo dyed cotton with just slight age staining and a small teat on the upper end. Additionally, the stark, single patch of deep indigo adds a striking touch to this otherwise very fine piece. Really lovely and recommended.
