This is a unique Buddhist's pilgrim towel. This item accompanied a pilgrim on their journey to Shikoku island as they attempted to visit all 88 shrines on their holy journey. This particular swath of cotton has over three dozen red seals, indicating the shrines and temples that were visited. It also has graphic handwritten sutra across the face. The cotton is loosely woven and has been folded in half, lengthwise. This religious artifact would make a striking decorative element.
