White Ground Carpet with Shield Palmettes
Heriz
Northwest Persia
circa 1890
310 x 240 cm (10’2” x 7’ 10”)
symmetrically knotted wool pile on a wool foundation

The carpets from the Heriz area rarely depart from their characteristic medallion and corner pattern on a red ground, which represented a formula that was greatly appreciated in the West. Here we see an allover pattern consisting of a variety of large scale shield palmettes, some recalling those present on early Caucasian rugs, connected to each other creating a trellis network. The ivory background allows the full range of well modulated colours to fully express their vitality, further enhanced by the mint condition of the silky wool pile.
