Despite its almost tribal feel, this unusually small Bakshaish carpet, 7'2" by 6'1", is probably the product of a Northwest Persian atelier. Like many early Northwest Persian rugs, the colors are beautiful, clear, and harmonious, and the overall design is powerful and delicate at the same time. Because of its relatively fine weave and many silk highlights, it was probably a commissioned piece for a local potentate. The minor borders at both ends are ragged and the large silk areas in the medallion and corners are heavily corroded, but the silk highlights in the rest of the carpet are in good order, and the pile is in very good condition throughout. This is a lovely very old rug that somehow, miraculously, remains in original condition.
