Vintage Caucasian (Shirvan/Kuba Style) Sumak Flatweave Rug
Hello esteemed collectors and decor enthusiasts,
We are thrilled to offer this striking Sumak flatweave rug, distinguished by its bold geometric patterns and vibrant color palette. Due to its unique texture and cultural depth, this piece is far more than just a floor covering—it is a true work of textile art.
Dimensions and Technical Details
Dimensions: 154 x 103 cm (approx. 5 ft 1 in x 3 ft 5 in)
Technique: Authentic Handwoven Sumak (Weft-Wrapped Flatweave). The Sumak technique creates a more durable, thicker, and distinctly textured surface compared to standard flatweaves.
Estimated Region/Style: Caucasus (Most likely exhibiting influences from the Shirvan or Kuba region).
Material: High-Quality Wool Pile (Likely 100% Wool).
Estimated Age: Vintage (Approx. 1950s – 1980s).
Pattern Iconography and Color Palette
The rug's main field features a deep Crimson/Maroon tone that retains its vibrancy. Dominating the field are two large, interconnected Geometric Medallions. The surrounding field is richly populated with stylized bird, animal (perhaps Ram's Horn/Dragon variations) figures—symbols often representing fertility and protection. The border is intricately designed with "s" shaped water-course motifs, which are traditionally symbols of safeguarding.
Colors: Deep Maroon/Crimson, Navy Blue/Black, Cream, Light Blue/Turquoise, and Mustard Yellow.
Condition and Display
The rug appears to be in excellent or very good condition relative to its age. It instantly adds authentic warmth and a focal point to modern, rustic, or Bohemian (Boho) interior styles. It is also highly suitable for display as wall art.
Important Note: Please examine all photographs carefully to appreciate the details and condition. Slight irregularities, color variations (abrash), and minimal wear consistent with the age are normal for vintage pieces and are considered part of the rug’s character.
