width: 44" / 112 cm
ORIGIN: India, Punjab Province; c. Early 1900’s
MATERIAL: Silk Floss on Khaddar Cotton
condition: Very Good; Like New Embroidery
This is a very colorful, vibrant, and exquisite hand embroidered phulkari bagh. The item appears to have been stowed away for decades (at the least) without any visible use. The embroidery is in excellent vintage condition. It would be a wonderful addition to any room as a mounted work of art, a throw, a coverlet, etc.
HISTORY: Phulkari baghs originate from the Punjab region of India-Pakistan dating from the early 19th to mid-20th centuries where they were created over years by women for use in married lives. For example, mothers would embroider a phulkari for placement in a daughter’s trousseau. Phulkaris were used as shawls/head coverings as well as bed coverings.
The embroidery on a phulkari is quite unique in that it is embroidered entirely from the back of the fabric, using a darning stitch. The result is that one side of the fabric is left with long floats of vibrant silk floss which create a beautiful colorful geometric design. All hand embroidery was done on panels of ‘Khaddar’ (home-spun, hand-woven and vegetable dyed cotton cloth).
note: This is a vintage and antique work of art and is not new.
