Back
This is a so called Mohtasham Kashan rug, all good colours, and lots of them, and superb wool. This is either a copy of a Mohtasham rug or a early original one, it has a very primitive border. Rug has both blue and white cotton wefts and it might have handspun cotton warps, last four centimeters may have been rewoven, but the colour matching is perfect, so it may just be repaired. Rug is very thin and areas with longer pile feels like velvet. It has assymetric knots open to the left. This rug looks a lot lot like a rug published by Peter Willborg in his book; 1980-1990 Ten Years Jubilee Exhibition, plate 11. My rug feels more primitive, but not necessarily older. There is also a silk rug ascribed to the son of Mohtasham, that has this field pattern.
This rug is a lot nicer in the flesh then in the pictures, and it needs a good wash.
