This is an antique Japanese boro farmer's workwear jacket called a noragi. The textile is made of hand spun cotton which has been dyed in natural, botanical indigo and woven into a subtle shima stripe pattern. The jacket is well worn and has boro mending patches on the interior and exterior to reinforce areas of wear. We can date this jacket to the late Meiji period or early twentieth century. Of additional interest are the added sashiko stitches in the shoulders and the cuffs to strengthen the garment, and the variation of indigo in the back which is quite handsome and adds a particular charm. a very wearable, rustic boro jacket.
