Dated 1843 Talish. 3 ft 4 in. x 10 ft 6 inches. ie., i assume it is a Talish but i am not 100% on this. First, the condition report: 1. The rug has been reduced and mitered. The location of this is shown in the photo with the arrows. 2. The pile along the sides has apparently not been reduced but the original selvedge was removed (probably) when the current overcasting was applied. Aside from this the rug is untouched and pristine in that no one has attempted any foundation or pile repairs. An ingenious person could probably come up with a good plan for restoration. Being clearly dated 1258 (Gregorian 1843) if this is truly a Talish it is to the best of my (limited) knowledge among the earliest dated examples of Talish weaving. Plate 211 in Azadi et al., shows a rug that predates this one by five years. Both rugs have borders not typical of that usually seen on later 19th century Talishes. Aside from the date, the open field has only one tiny character comprised of five knots. Spiritual minimalism. i think this qualifies as an important rug.
