Shahsevan Rug, 19th c (3rd q), The striped patterns of alternating geometry colorfully drawn in this splendid rug from the south Caucasus may indeed be the largest known antique rendering of this classic Shahsevan design. Originating in the design repertoire of much smaller flatwoven sumac bags that must have been intimately familiar to the weaver, they are drawn here in pile with fantastic scale. Designs originating in sumac and other flatweave techniques have served as inspiration for pile weaving in the Near East and Central Asia for centuries. This piece, however, faithfully renders a complete Shahsevan animal bag with appropriate measures undertaken for continuation of pattern, design and rescaling.
