Back
Rare early silk door hanging. Beautifully designed, this rare antique Laotian textile features a combination of two panels to form one remarkable piece of art and culture. Of particular interest with this piece is the asymmetry of the two panels, which is a known feature of shamanistic textiles. The stunning diamond shaped figures are a lozenge motif, which are believed to be a symbol of the opening of the “third eye,” which symbolizes enlightenment and perception beyond normal sight. Within and surrounding the lozenge, a plethora of intriguing mythological creatures, animals, and flora can be seen. Another creature which surrounds the lantern is the Saang Hong, a half bird, half elephant creature. This prominent mythological creature is known as a symbol of protection against evil spirits. It is a majestic creature that can travel between natural and supernatural realms. Riding on top of the Saang Hong is an ancestral figure, These ancestral figures were often weaved by Buddhists who wanted to ask for assistance from the ancestors on their ascension to heaven. Stunning flower, and hook motifs along the outer edges of the lozenge complete this brilliant piece of history.
