Xam Nuea ceremonial blanket.
This mesmerizing antique Laotian textile features multiple large ancestral figures known as Phii Nyak or Giant Spirit. This Phii Nyak combines elements of a human ancestor with that of a river dragon. This ancestral figure is known as a protector who guards its people. In this textile you can see the arms forming a spiral shape to create an even more elaborate design. Stunning flower, star, and hook motifs can be seen surrounding the Phii Nyak. An interesting contrast of colors occurs at the bottom border of the textile, where several ancestral figures can be seen in a seated position, almost as if worshiping the Giant Spirit, Phii Nyak.
