this an early chinese rug in fragmentary condition but this is not a fragment of bigger rug as is is attested by the original ends and selvedge. the fact that it looks like the quarter of a rug doesn t mean that it is a part of a carpet made originally in 4 pieces.and as we know oversize pieces from early time, there were no reason to do like this. it has been most probably made in this shape to fit a special place in a nobel house or palace. the bold lotos border is similar to other known early pieces, like the drawing of the clouds too. wide weft system and long pile, originally a rather thick carpet. the right half has still good pile. 200x 200cm. around 1700 or before.
