Antique one of a kind Afghan compass. For the pilgrim who has everything. Said to be an aid for establishing the direction of Mecca for prayer. This compass is set up to point towards the Southwest - roughly the direction of Mecca from Afghanistan. i bought this in Herat, Afghanistan in 1972. Silver inlay with blue enamel in a floral pattern covers the globe shaped compass. Orange enamel is baked onto the inside one half of the globes interior and a silver foil lining coates the other half. a stylized bird-shaped direction indicator is balanced on a post beneath a cut glass cover. a simple, swivel closure devise holds the cover closed. a hand made silver chain with hook and two ancient Kufic inscribed coins are attached. i doubt you'll ever see another like this. i was told it was unique, and i think that's probably true, but that was Afghanistan way back when... a wonderful and very curious object.
