Early large kazak rug. Unusual and archaic kazak with karachopf family resemblance but on it's own branch of the family tree. i am transfixed by the mysterious ivory boxes filled with carnival like decorations. All beautiful natural colors including a most unusual and pretty soft apricot/pink. a difficult life is evidenced by the numerous old attempts at repair, some poor selvage, few small patches, some crude little repiling (with poor materials). Still the bulk of the rug survives and continues to charm. Most definetly not for the floor. ca. mid 19th c. or earlier. 5'1" x 7'6"
