This is a striking example of an orange Tibetan ‘khaden’ rug depicting two dragons playing with the wish-fulfilling pearl. a khaden is a Tibetan sitting and sleeping rug, with a piece of this quality probably originally made for a lama or a wealthy gentleman. The dragons (a creature of great creative power in Tibetan and Chinese symbolism) are depicted in mid-flight, surrounded by clouds on an orange background. Their depiction has exquisite details; the scales covering the dragons’ bodies, their horns and claws, the colourful manes flying in the wind and bulging eyes to name but a few. The clouds are executed expertly in four different colours. The rug is in great condition and is 150 cm long and 90 cm wide. The outer border is framed in a red fabric, typical for Tibetan rugs. It was made from sheep’s wool, using natural dyes and was sourced from a local family near Kanding in Eastern Tibet (or the far west of modern-day Sichuan). We estimate it was originally woven in the 1920′s.
