Antique Sarouk Ferahan Rug
Circa 1920, North-West Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation, Size 2.07m x 1.36m
This rug is made at the end-period of when Sarouk rugs were being made for the local /export market and when pieces were then mass produced for the usa. Those pieces are now termed as ‘American’ Sarouks which have a profusion of salmon pink colour. This piece still retains the rather rigid curvilinear design of earlier Sarouk Ferahan rugs but is enhanced by slightly softer silkier wool. Though this is suggestive of a later manufacturing date as the piece still resonates with a all of the classic composite elements of fine pieces from the later 19th century; fine workmanship plus the use of top quality materials and exemplary choice of design.
