Antique Persian Bidjar Rug
Circa 1910, North-West Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation, Size 2.13m x 1.36m
This rug from the Bidjar district has the customary rigid feel and structure of pieces emblematic of pieces from this area. It has the classic double wefted construction hence its rigidity and angular design with use of the ‘herati’ pattern in the field. Cecil Edwards noted during his survey on Persian carpets that the people of Bidjar had actually created a special tool which was used to beat the extra weft down with (‘The Persian Carpet’ p124). This piece demonstrates how many pieces from this area had a somewhat comparative ‘archaic’ look and feel about them; belying the actual high quality of workmanship involved in making such pieces.
