Rare Antique Persian Veramin Rug in a Classic Safavid Design
Circa 1890, Northern Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation, Size 2.16m x 1.40m
This rug is a rare example of pieces made in a small agricultural area south of what was to become the future capital Tehran. The rug has an archaic look about since the design does not appear to be symmetrical. This harks to an earlier age of the Safavid period when such designs were used in often larger and specially commissioned pieces. Veramin generally also produced pieces in the ‘mina khani’ motif; so this example with its beautiful lighter blue colour palette demonstrates the lesser known aspects of classic Persian carpet weaving in the late Qajar period.
