this is a beautiful and rare antique indonesian hat from the south sulawesi. it is made of palm leaves, decorated with pieced cloth and embroidery.the round base is perhaps bambu. please note that the transparent material is not plastic but mica plaques. a similar hat is in the collection of the " koninklijk instituut voor de tropen "in amsterdam and is pictured in "the art of indonesia", fritz a. wagner, 1959. there is a slit in the red cloth covering the top which need to be fixed. from an old european collection.
