Back
very rare, antique moroccan prayer rug Structurally this piece was woven in the Djebel Siroua region south of the High Atlas in Morocco. It has an exceptionally fine weave and is shrouded in mystery. The pile goes from bottom to top, as is the case in many genuine prayer rugs. The mosques are ornate and not the kind of building found in this region. The two human faces appear to be men in military uniform with French style caps, tunics with lapels and appear to be wearing ties. It may be that it was specially commissioned for French or Moroccan officers in the very early 20th century when that part of Morocco was under French rule. The pile is very low. The selvedges and bottom border intact and the top border has been secured and around 3 rows of knots are missing. It will make a fascinating addition to a collection perhaps as a wall hanging or table cover. Reference 2555. Size 135 x 66cms. 4ft.5in. x 2ft.2in. Euros 385.
