Striking antique Anatolian 'eye dazzler' kilim from the Taurus Mountains, Antalya area.

Continuing the spectacular orange theme (see the Gaziantep rug posted on Rugrabbit earlier) here is another recent arrival from finds made in Turkey in September and October. The orange may be aniline (it was after all introduced in the 1870s) but one cannot be certain without testing and i don't know who actually does this. In any case, the well saturated dyes in this kilim and the skilful effect of the combination of colours have the truly dramatic effect intended by the weaver and give a remarkably modern appearance to a kilim made in the first quarter of the 1900s, perhaps earlier. The indigo colour and drawing in the classic Antalya borders is cleverly echoed and continued as guls, giving the kilim an additional coherence.

In good condition with small areas of old reweave using aniline dyed wool, that has since faded, of corroded or worn organically dyed weft. i have come across small antique Antalya eye dazzler kilims and have three in my collection but this is the first large old example i have found.
