Karasu (crow) Tengu mask, Japan. Kiri wood, pigments, gold leaf. 6.75" (18 cm) high by 6" (14 cm) wide. Late Edo-early Meiji, 19th century. This bird mask represents Karasu Tengu, a mythical demon fighter who trained the hero Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune on Mt. Kurama near Kyoto over a thousand years ago. On the back can be seen the embossed mark of maker Osaki Kotasu.
