Back
rare afghan prayer rug. The contents of the field make this an extraordinary and rare piece. At the top there are depictions of two pendants known as "tumar". These are sometimes attached to a necklace or sewn onto a coat called a "chyrpy". In both cases the pendant can be opened and precious documents stored inside. They are separated by a depiction of a small kabila stone. At the bottom there is an inscription and the Arabic numbers 2220. This cannot be a date since it would equate to ad 2777. It may be a reference to a verse of the Hadith. Structurally the rug has undyed, hand spun brown woollen warps and wefts and the construction suggests it is from southern Afghanistan. The condition is impeccable. It is a very collectable piece. Reference 2611. Size 101 x 62cms. 3ft.4in. x 2ft. Euros 415. sold thankyou
