Set of Aymara cargo bags, (alforjas), Bolivia. Early 19th century or before. Placed over the head and draping front and back from the shoulders, these double bags are said to be used by traditional Aymara healers for carrying herbal remedies and other medical paraphernalia. Each bag measures 16 x 13 inches with flaps closed. This is an exceptional and rare example of the type - large and early. Very good condition for such things and as good as they get for age and design.
