The present carpet was made in Sarouk, one of the most famous carpet weaving areas in central Persia. Rugs of this kind are characterized by their high knot density and exceptional quality. This example boasts an intricate all-over design in vibrant colors. Transversal zigzag borders in blue, green, red and yellow divide the rug into several rhomb-shaped medallions. The colorful pattern shows so-called herati motifs amidst stylized flowers and foliage on a dark blue ground, typical of the Ferahan carpet work. The field is framed by three narrow borders with floral decoration. Nowadays antique Ferahan carpets such as this are considered particularly desirable collectors’ carpets. The carpet is in good condition with signs of age and wear. The dimensions are approx. 8.85 x 2.85 m. (tfa)
