This is a stunning Japanese han juban, or underkimono. Han juban were worn much like an undershirt is for western clothing, they kept the kimono from being soiled. The bodice of this particular garment is made of hand woven, indigo dyed cotton that has been stenciled with a gorgeous radiating star pattern. The sleeves are in complimenting contrast - - sleeves of hand spun, board clamped itajime shibori cotton are attached.
