This is a beautiful yosegire patchwork futon cover dating to the early 1900s. The word "yosegire" literally means 'the sewing together of different fragments', and in this case the fragments are a wonderful variety of woven silk fabrics, including shibori, rinzu, chirimen, and some textiles taken from Meiji era kimonos. The fabrics are delicate and the resulting atmosphere is graceful as a whole. This futon cover is intact. The back is lined with black plain silk and the batting, or cotton wadding has been removed. It is in excellent condition, except for some minor loss at one of the corners and a group of small holes as shown in the photos. A very unusual and collectible Japanese folk textile.
