Yomud Ensi, 4'8 x 5'7. 19th Century. Fresh find. Features a beautiful purple field filled with a squadron of bees, with ivory and yellow drones arrayed in alternating diagonal lines. An unusual "tree of life" design cleverly made from ram's horns defines both the vertical and horizontal bars. The vertical bar terminates in "Yomud Eagle" motifs above and below, creating a distinctly phallic form. Six borders frame the field; from the outside in, the borders are: tiny octagons, syrga forks on ivory, barber pole, spiders on a nice red, another barber pole, and finally ashiks on ivory. The tiny octagon, spider, and both barber pole borders are four-sided, while both ivories are three-sided. "Yomud Pines" on a brown field define the lower elem band. Woven with 112 symmetric knots per square inch (8x14). Pile is down to the knots, there is some foundation visible plus effective kashmir work at lower left, side edges have been added, and a red hanging sleeve has been added to the back at top. This ensi compares favorably to Plate 145 in the Uwe Jourdan Turkoman book (picture provided). The last four rug images show the back.
