Wonderful Sivas Carpet.
1st half of 19th century (i think 1815-1850), with well balanced wonderful natural colors: Saturated madder red, a delightful apricot color, sky blue, light green which is a combination of woad and a flavonoid containing plant, ivory and mink mauve tending to brown. Had already some very limited repair. Nevertheless the beauty of the piece deserves a good, professional restoration where needed
This carpet ornamented by mother goddess, rams horn and stylized celestial patterns has a well defined balanced design reflecting the beauty of colors. This carpet which reflects all aspects of the area is probably made by Kurds of Sivas, and most probably by Qoçgiri tribe.
Qoçgiri people are Kurdish speakers of Sivas area formed from four main and many little subtribes. They came in thisarea some 250 years ago from Ovacık district of Tunceli province due to a conflict between the tribes of the area. These is still a small portion of the tribe in Ovacık as well as Kürecik district of Malatya, Refahiye disctict of Erzincan and Saimbeyli disctrict of Adana cities.
The tribe used mostly Turkic originated patterns and use heavily Turkish sayings in their "broken" Kurdish dialect. Memebers of the tribe state they were members of big Turcoman confederations of the area in the 1600s then adopted Kurdish language afterwords due to several political and religious reasons, in order to "survive". The patterns and weaving structure shows completely parallel properties with these statements, although the scholars have not done a research in this specific subject yet.
