Katazome strip, Japan. Hand loomed cotton, indigo. 64.5" long (163 cm) by 12.75" (32.3 cm) wide. Late 19th to early 20th century. Ex Fifi White, Berkeley, California. Katazome refers to the resist dye technique using rice paste and bran squeezed through a stencil (katagami) to produce beautiful repeat patterns. Graphic, graceful karakusa arabesques cover the surface of this panel, which was likely part of an old futon cover. Excellent condition, no holes or spots.
