Shrine pedestal, Japan. Japanese cypress, gilding, Edo Period. 3.5" high x 7.75" wide x 4" deep (9 x 20 x 10cm). This richly gilded shrine pedestal consists of three pieces, with a removable upper tray platform finished on both sides with black lacquer. The upper platform is anchored to the lower portion with four pointed wooden pins, a traditional Japanese carpentry technique that dates back to the 7th century. In excellent condition.
