Typical mau (man's cloth) from Amanuban, Timor, Indonesia. Central band of warp ikat (34 cm wide) done in handspun yarn and natural dyes with four rows of birds that alternately touch wings or feet, executed in morinda red and belapit (dark purple, nearly black achieved by overdying of morinda with indigo). Flanked by two wide bands in commercial yarn, mostly red and yellow and a few accent stripes in other colours. The use of animal motifs (formerly reserved for the nobility) signals that this cloth was not intended for daily use, but for more formal occasions. Some minor smudging, not affecting the decorated midfield.
