a fine antique glass bead woven Central Asian necklace from Nuristan region of Afghanistan. Ethnographic arts of Nuristan (be it textiles, jewellery or wood artefacts) are very distinct in comparison to other ethnic groups of the region such as the Uzbeks or Kirghiz. Their uncompromising designs are so archaic and unique, perhaps due to the fact that Nuristan is a such a remote valley that only just over a hundred years ago were they incorporated to the main stream Muslim culture of the region from their own unique fire worship ancient religions. This reflects clearly in their designs. This beautiful necklace is very impressive and a true work of art. a large example with a tasseled diamond shaped pendant and thick strand that follows a compartmented repeating diamond motif in an array of colours. It is made up of lovely polychrome beads. It dates early 1900s/ early 20th century. Rare to find one with such good condition. size: necklace hangs down 36cm (14"). Diameter of the necklace about 60cm (24"-25"). The Pendant part is approx 7.5cm x 6cm (3" x 2.5"), tassels extent an extra 6cm (2.5").
