Lot 34, Transylvanian rug with Star-and-cartouche border, Turkey mid-17th century
5 ft. 8in. x 3ft. 11in., 172 x 119 cm, Published: Eberhart Herrmann, Seltene Orientteppiche, Band 10, pl. 6, Provenance: collection Prof. Günther Marschall, Hamburg, Condition: good, some areas low pile, several small repairs, Wool pile, wool warp, wool weft.
Equally early and elegant as lot 144, this Transylvanian double niche rug has the unusual feature of bi-coloured spandrels. The upper is deep indigo blue and the lower a rich golden yellow.
The sparsely decorated rich madder red field and spandrels, a style few other Transylvanian rugs show, emphasises the ornamentation. Equally of note are the well-proportioned star and cartouche major border; the minor borders which feature an unusual style of drawing of the trefoil design; and the original wide kelims at both ends. Auction November 28th, 4pm (cet), https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/42169735_transylvanian-rug-with-sta...
