Man's wrap, hinggi, East-Sumba, Indonesia, circa 1925. Uncommonly large hinggi. The sheer size stresses its importance. Other elements to do so are the tightly executed patola ratu midfield, and the habaku motif in the fourth and eighth band. Classical eleven band design. The ikat work is of the highest order throughout, with precise control of all diagonals. Piece is in excellent state of conservation. The absence of a cross-woven border, kabakil, indicates that it was kept as a pusaka, heirloom, and never intended to be worn.Classical eleven band design.
