An interesting square shaped kantha quilt from Bengal, Asia, can be identified as baytan kantha derived from sanskrit vitan which means 'the canopy for Lord Vishnu's throne". Used originally for wrapping books and valuable items, this beautiful piece is embroidered with cotton thread in red and two shades of blue, and a white running stitch background.Fine and intricate handwork employing motifs of various figures like lotus in the form of an elaborate mandala in cencentric design common to the craft of kantha, grouped around with human figures who are engaged in everyday activites such as horse riding, boating, etc. This elaborate composition also has motifs of birds, animals, fishes, flowers, trees in four corners and a bus. This piece displays a vivid contemporary theme.
Size- 107 x 104 cms.
Period- Late 19th/Early 20th Century.
Condition- some stains, otherwise in a good condition.
