Four pre-Columbian food bags with original contents. South coastal Region of Peru. a.d. 500 - a.d. 1200, but it is hard to determine exactly without doing a c14 measurement. It is quite rare to find pre-Columbian bags made for carrying food or herbs that retain their contents to such a degree. These likely would have been made as grave offerings to accompany their owner on the journey to the afterlife.
The three larger bags contain corn with the largest containing popped corn that is perhaps 800 and 1,200 years old. It measures approximately 10 x 12 inches. The other two larger bags are full of corn kernels of two different varieties. The small bag has seven woven pockets and contains a dried brownish plant material that resembles tobacco or coca leaf matter.
Together, these bags would make a small, highly unusual and interesting collection not easy to duplicate. These pieces are priced reasonably and can be sold either as a group or individually.
