A 'hatti' silk head dress shawl of the finest quality made by the weaver Issa Fares Al-Abed in Homs, western Syria. The description on the original paper wrapping accompanying the shawl states:
“Excellent Fabric; lasting dyes. Registered Trademark. Phone 3044. The most durable and beautiful headgear weavings. Workshop of Issa Fares Al-Abed and Sons. Homs, Syria. Attention: each article of headgear without our name embroidered on it in gold thread is considered a fake. Watch out for fakes." With thanks to Hadi Maktabi for the translation.
Tightly woven, substantial extremely fine and heavy silk and gold thread with a weight of 1.21 kilos. Woven during the Syrian Republic period between 1932 to 1958. In excellent unworn condition and very unusually in its original wrapper with labels and medals to the back. Size 145cm x 145cm plus 38cm long silk gold bound and plaited tassels.
