a fine Persian Safavid helmet c 1700. Heavy silver inlay with an engraved lattice pattern and floral sprays in a style seen in some "Vase" carpets. There is gold plating around the top of the steel point, on the feather holders, and around the band that encircles the head along the bottom. Roundels containing beautifully drawn hares, a kylin, and what appears to be a dragon alternate with inscribed calligraphic cartouches. The base material seems to be bronze or steel.
