Early Wedding tunisian top Circa 1800/1850 Tunisia Exceptional tunic of wedding embroidery of gold silver and silk ribbon very probably dating from before 1850. Rectangle tunic with open neckline and scalloped Ribbon with gold arm crossing. Alternation of 18th century figured silk ribbons, sewn bands of silk violine twill embroidered with gold and silver flat yarns. Most recent brackets with rings on the back. At its centre band embroidered silver talismanic ancestral grounds, probably much older (17th century?). Good condition except the ribbons of silk. Dimensions: height 124 cm, circumference 188 cm.
The flat silver wire embroidery are ancestral speciality of the city of Tunis, along with ribbons of silk manufactured in Djerba or Mahdia. Known as the most beautiful embroidery of silver flat wire in the world, they were executed by the ma' Germany, or professional embroiderer. The flat yarns were produced by local Jewish Goldsmith. Note, a cord applied ws allowed maintain embroidery, technical terrain, typically Mediterranean, to bring together the trappunto and the boutis. a true masterpiece!
Silk ribbons are very deteriorated to the level of the shoulders (see photos). the structural weight of the embroidery alter much more light and fragile silks. Nothing else to report.
