Saturday, July 23, 2016 Lecture: "Fine Cotton Khadi & Hand Painted Chintz: Two Key Textile Traditions Alive in South India" with Karthika Audinet Textile Designer, Educator and Independent Researcher, from Washington, DC. Of the many great Indian textile traditions, two were key to India’s unrivalled supremacy amongst world textiles. India’s delicately woven muslins and brilliantly colored and patterned textiles were coveted luxury goods, often taking on roles that their makers never imagined. In the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, artisans still practice unbroken traditions that are thousands of years old, weaving fine cotton fabrics with yarn spun from endemic Gossypium Arboreum and hand painting patterned Chintz, employing natural dyes using tedious complex processes. Textile designer, educator and independent researcher Karthika Audinet will share photographs and insights from her trips to remote villages in Andhra Pradesh to highlight the fine craftsmanship of these two textiles against the historic backdrop of Indian cotton textiles.
