Back
Unknown sumac needlework pieces, a mirror pair of what appear to be parts of a prelate's ceremonial habit. Likely Eastern Church or Armenian, possibly Russian Orthodox. a carefully designed and skillfully executed pattern of rosettes in squares, with accents of embroidery. Indicating its religious function is a square embroidered cross on velvet foldover
flap. Central size of each piece. 12x15".
Colors are true Red, clear Green, Navy, Salmon, Ivory with some Raspberry, Black and Darker Red embroidery. These do not appear to be fragments, and could actually be a set associated over time with a particular individual or office.
Age conservatively estimated to be third quarter19th century, but velvet panels may be earlier.
