Ikat coffin cover or skirt
Origin: Roti island, Indonesia, c. 1900
Technique: Handspun cotton, natural dyes, warp ikat
Notes: This piece consists of two panels joined together along the selvedge. It was found as one of a pair. It could be a tubeskirt that has been unstitched. On the other hand, it is also believed to have been a coffin cover, due to the thicker handspun yarn and uncommon design format of plain black bands and rows of x motifs across the centrefield. In person, the piece has a sombre character.
Condition: Excellent, no stains, holes or tears. The handspun cotton has a firm, slightly stiff hand and is sandy to the touch. The colours have darkened over the years and are rich and soft.
Dimensions: 128 x 88 cm
