Batik skirt cloth (kain panjang)
Origin: Indonesia, Java, Solo, 2nd quarter of 20th century
Technique: Hand drawn batik, natural dyes
Notes: a traditional central Javanese batik design contrasting a large, repeating motif of the mythical Garuda with a background of alternate diagonal lines of soga dots and a white broken meander. Distinguished by an unusual deep blue ground. The technique of placing small internal cream sections within soga brown gives the dappled golden effect that is characteristic of Solo batik.
Condition: Excellent, the colours are rich and deep, with no fading of the soga dye. The cloth is slightly stiff with age, and does not appear to have been much used. It retains the folds for the pleats that would be gathered in front when it was worn.
